Tsagaan Sar (Lunar New Year) celebrations take place in 2016 from February 8th for about a week.  It begins on the 8th Feb on a day called 'Bituun' which is a 'closing down' day, and families clean their homes and yards to welcome the new year in with a clean slate.   Over the week, family members visit each others homes, friends visit their close friends and welcome in the new year eating buuz (steamed dumplings), drinking tea and other beverages in celebration.

There are numerous activities which are very interesting to participate in and/or watch, including the dawn welcoming of the new year on a nearby mountaintop, and an ice festival at the river closeby to town, and a 'Naadam' horse race over the pass to the north-west of town.
